ISO 14006 Environmental management systems – Guidelines for incorporating ecodesign

This documents provides guidelines to assist organizations to establish a systematic approach to the incorporation and implementation of ecodesign within an environmental management system (EMS). ISO 14006 was first published in 2011. Following consultation with National Member Bodies (NMB) it was decided in late 2016 to revise the standard.

The revision of ISO 14006 considers:

  • the new editions of ISO 14001:2015, ISO 14004:2016 and other relevant standards;
  • the principles and concepts of design and development in the latest edition of ISO 14001;
  • the high level structure (HLS), identical core text and common terms and core definitions of Annex SL Appendix 2 of the ISO Directives Part 1;
  • that the revised standard should be independent of the numbering and exact wording used in ISO 14001, any other relevant standard and Annex SL Appendix 2 so that it will not be automatically necessary to revise ISO 14006 every time either ISO 14001 or any other relevant standard is revised.

This document is mainly focused on organizations which have an EMS, however, it can also be useful to organizations without a formal EMS but are interested in reducing adverse product-related environmental impacts. The guidelines are intended to be applicable to all sizes or types of organizations.
