Both standards use the new ISO common framework of all management systems standards and hence use the identical text, common terms and core definitions. However the two standards deal with different areas on management and hence will also be different.
To ensure they were as aligned as possible there was close co-operation between the committees with responsibility for the revision of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Both working groups benefited from regularly updated tabular comparison on how various elements of the common management system framework (HLS) are being handled by the two working groups.
A liaison arrangement existed between the two committees to help understanding and to identify possible improvement to alignment between the two standards.
National Standard Bodies were requested to collaborate among their respective ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 experts to develop and submit joint comments on issues related to alignment between the two standards.
